A typical DLSR camera usually comes with 18-55mm focal length lens aka the kit lens. However, there are many different camera lens types available. Some of them are telephoto, some are wide-angle and some are macro lenses. These types of lenses are being used in all types of cameras.
Camera lens types and what they do
A typical telephoto lens is used to capture distant objects like capturing birds, planes etc. A telephoto lens may have the focal length up to 300mm and can capture very distant objects. Telephoto lens decreases the dof (depth of field) enabling you to distinguish your subjects from the background with shallow focus.
On the other hand, a macro lens is used to capture very close objects like the retina of an eye, or tiny particles’ details etc. They have a high magnifying ability which captures every detail of the tiniest subject from up close.
Another type of camera lens is a wide-angle lens and this lens is good for taking wide-angle photos up to 180 degrees. there are three types of wide lenses: Wide, ultra-wide, and fish-eye. A fish-eye lens has front element that bows outwards like fish’s face, allowing it to see as wide as 180 degrees. These lenses are good for certain purposes, but are often overused without real purpose – use them with caution. An ultra-wide angle lens has a focal length shorter than 20mm, but is meant to correct the fish-eye distortion; these are sometimes referred to as “aspherical”.
Another type of camera lenses is a prime lens. It has a fixed focal length and has no optical zoom. Because of the relative simplicity of their build they have typically large apertures and are useful for indoor and low light photography.
Some people prefer the lens that can be used for multitasking and zoom lenses are a good option here. They provide zoom up to 200mm and can also be used for macro shots. These lenses are good for people who want to travel and don’t want to carry heavy camera bags and a large telephoto lens.
